What we collect
-
Account
When you first open the app, an anonymous account is created through Firebase Authentication. If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your Google account email, name and profile picture from Google. We do not receive your Google password.
-
Profile
The display name and test date you enter, and your language choice.
-
Study progress
Which questions, signs and board tasks you have opened and answered, your answers, mock exam scores and the days you studied. This is stored on your device and, once you have an account, on our servers so it can follow you to a new phone.
-
Devices
A name and model for each phone you sign in on, the app version, an installation identifier and the IP address of the connection, used to limit how many devices a Premium account is active on.
The app also sends a device identifier (the Android ID on Android, or an identifier the app keeps in the iOS Keychain), which stays the same if you reinstall the app. We store only a one-way hash of it, not the identifier itself, and use it to recognise a reinstalled phone so a new-learner offer cannot be claimed twice.
-
Purchases
When you buy Premium, Google Play processes the payment. We receive the order number, product, price, currency, country and time of purchase from Google through a purchase-management service that records which accounts have Premium. We never see your card or M-Pesa details.
-
Diagnostics
Crash reports through Firebase Crashlytics, usage statistics through Firebase Analytics, and timings such as how long screens, quizzes, the Premium offer and purchases take to load through Firebase Performance Monitoring. We use these to find bugs, see which features are used and keep the app fast.
They do not include your name or email, but they are pseudonymous rather than anonymous: crash reports and usage statistics are linked to your account's Firebase ID so we can follow a problem across sessions. You can turn crash reports and usage statistics off in Settings → Privacy; both are on until you do.
-
Funnel steps
We note on our servers when you first finish setting up the app, first set your test date, first use up a day's free questions and first see the Premium offer. These four steps are sent even when usage statistics are turned off, because they are part of how we run the app rather than analytics. We use them only as totals over many learners, to see where learners stop using the app.
-
Notifications
When the app starts, Firebase Cloud Messaging gives your phone a push token so the app can receive notifications. The token is held by Google; we do not store it on our servers. You can turn notifications off in your phone's settings.
-
Support emails
If you contact support from the app, your email app opens with a message that includes the app version, your phone's model, its operating system version, your language and the app's log file as an attachment. Nothing is sent unless you send that email, and you can remove any of it first.
-
App integrity
Firebase App Check verifies that requests come from an unmodified copy of the app, using Google Play Integrity.
What we do not collect
- Contacts
- Location
- Photos
- Microphone
- Anything from other apps
Why
- To run the app and keep your progress
- To sell and honour Premium
- To prevent account sharing and fraud
- To fix bugs and keep the app fast
- To see, in totals, where learners stop using the app
- To meet legal obligations such as keeping records of sales
Who else sees it
Google (Firebase, Firebase Cloud Messaging, Google Play, Play Integrity) and a purchase-management service process data on our behalf under their own privacy terms.
We do not sell personal data and we do not share it with advertisers. The app shows no adverts.
Where it is kept
On servers we rent from a hosting provider in the European Union, and with the processors above in their respective regions. Your data is transferred outside Kenya to do this, and we rely on our providers' contractual and security safeguards to protect it.
How long
Your account and progress are kept until you delete your account. Purchase records are kept in anonymised form for as long as the law requires. Crash, usage and performance data is kept by Firebase according to its retention settings, at most 14 months.
Your rights
You can see your profile and progress in the app. You can delete your account and all personal data from Settings → Account → Delete account, or by requesting it at our website; the deletion is immediate in the app and completed with our processors within 30 days.
Under the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 you may also ask us what data we hold about you, ask for corrections, or object to processing, by emailing support@compwiz.io.
Children
The app is for people preparing for a driving test and is not directed at children under 16.
Changes
We will post changes here and note the date. Significant changes are announced in the app.
