Mobile App or Website: Which Should You Build First?
Most businesses do not need both on day one. The right answer depends on how often people come back and what they do when they arrive.
Founders usually ask this question the wrong way round. It is not about which is more modern, it is about frequency of use.
Start with a website when
People need to find you, check whether you are credible, and get in touch. That is a discovery problem, and search engines index websites, not app stores. A website is also cheaper to change while you are still learning what your customers want.
Start with an app when
Your users come back several times a week, need to work without a connection, or rely on something only the device can do: camera, GPS, push notifications, offline storage.
A field officer recording livestock data in Marsabit needs an app. A tour operator being compared against four competitors needs a website.
The honest middle ground
A responsive website that works well on a phone covers most early-stage needs. Build the app once you can point at real usage that justifies it.
